A quick introduction to Keto

High-Protein, Low Carb diets are all the rage right now - but starting one may be a daunting task for many. Luckily, we are here to demystify the mysterious ‘Keto Diet’ and share some valuable tips to help you on your journey.

Q: What is Keto?

Simply put, keto is a high-protein/low carbohydrate diet that encourages our bodies to undergo ketosis where it will burn fats, not carbs, for energy. It typically consists of a healthy mix of greens, unsaturated fats, and protein, and aims to reduce carb consumption to less than 50g per day.

Q: Why Keto?

Originating as an effective treatment for seizures in the 1920s, keto is now known to have a range of benefits including weight loss, improving skincare, maintaining brain function and more. While traditional weight loss methods involve cutting food intake which can be potentially harmful, ketogenic diets are easy to start and maintain. It is now the No.1 recommended healthy weight-loss diet by experts worldwide.

Q: What should I avoid in a Keto diet?

Two words: Dirty keto.

Avoid it. Hate it.

‘Dirty keto’, also known as ‘lazy keto’ is a corner-cutting and harmful diet that many newcomers fall for. Often packaged as an ‘easy introduction to keto’ - these often consist of processed foods such as bacon and fried meats that are high in sodium, additives and saturated fats. Yet, this defeats the benefits of keto and can even do more harm than good.

Q: Thanks for the info...but where do I start?

A Keto diet normally consists of:

Meat and seafood

Eggs

Cheese

Nuts

Avocados

Seeds

Low-carb green vegetables (watch out for those with starchy fillers or added sugars)

But with so many options to choose from, where do you start?
