Crystallographer Joyce Tsang Shoots for the Stars

It was back in 2017 that Joyce Tsang found her true (re)calling. As a child, Joyce was fascinated by the stones, crystals and trinkets that her father placed collected from his travels that were placed throughout their home. She was mesmerized by its beauty and energy, but as life tends to veer you off in different directions, gemology and astrology took a backseat. But it was in the stars that she would rekindle her passion during a trip to Sedona for her sister’s spa-chelorette party. “Sedona is a magical place, known for its four main energetic vortexes, beautiful red-rock landscapes, and an overall retreat and spiritual destination,” she explains. “This trip jumpstarted my dive into my own healing and deep self-reflection in life.” It was this turning point that she decided to go full speed ahead with her very own brand, Stone and Star in hopes of sharing her stories and finds with the rest of the world.

Stumbling on her newfound adoration for stones and stars, Joyce has since been a strong advocate for crystallography. Through private workshops and her own Instagram account (@shopstoneandstar), she’s managed to acquire a dedicated fan base ranging from novices to virtuosos, and even at times, the occasional skeptic-turned-enthusiast. Joyce believes in allowing a person to connect and feel the energy of crystals – not every stone is created equal and not every stone is destined for everyone.

To find the most suited crystal for you, Joyce recommends that just like most things in life, it’s all up to trusting yourself and your intuition. The vibrations and frequencies in each crystal is different and so feeling what resonates with you is key.

It all begins with a stone’s visual appeal and attraction. Certain colours and shapes will call out to someone more than others. Then it is a matter of feeling the kinetic energy that radiates from the stone – a stone that works for you should be one that you can feel a physical connection with. “There is no right or wrong way to choose a crystal; just follow your heart and your inner knowing,” Joyce suggests.

From studying gems and crystals, Joyce found a deeper calling – astrology – the other half of Stone and Star. Blessed with gifts from Mother Nature, Joyce believes that we can find ourselves through the depths of the earth and the height of the skies. “The cosmos and stars have always been something I’ve felt very strongly connect to. Gazing up at the skies at night, and spotting twinkling lights lets me know that we are not alone and reminds me how fortunate we are to be surrounded by such beauty.”

So where is the connection between crystals and astrology? It turns out that crystals are more or less supportive of each horoscope. And a thorough understanding of our astrological signs – sun (what we read in newspapers and magazines), moon and rising – can further leverage the benefits of crystals and their powers. An important component of Stone and Star, Joyce dedicates posts on her Instagram to offer tidbits of information and story sales based on the season. “I curate a selection of crystals based on their energies,” she explains. “It’s a fun way to get to know crystals on an energetic level if you don’t know already, and it’s a great way to grow your crystal collection.”
